Student Leadership – Prefects and Student Council
BATCE has over the last two years, placed greater emphasis on student leadership at the institution as we continue to encourage our students to take greater ownership of their learning and education, to play a greater role within the decision making and change processes of their schools and, ultimately, to become better global citizens. Student leadership at BATCE has been activated in three primary areas of operation – the classroom, the school system and the community.
At the classroom level, leadership is driven as our teachers engage and encourage students to actively decide about class rules and behavioural boundaries and expectations. Leaders are formally installed within the form class setting and prefects and monitors and informally encouraged through group work and team activities.
The school system we continue to engage students in the governance and decision-making bodies of the school, such as the Students’ Council and Prefect Body and as school ‘ambassadors’ or representatives in many activities off the school compound. Students continue to be trained in peer support, and mentoring programs. We invite students to develop and implement projects to change and improve school operations, culture, climate, practices and reform initiatives.
At the community level we continue encouraging our students to develop and implement community-based projects, possibly in partnership with other agencies, to enhance and support learning and to engage with the wider community.
Our student voices tell us that they want these leadership opportunities for growth and as a responsible institution we will continue to listen and support them in creating these opportunities.
